Introduction

BusinessCare - a resource efficiency programme - and Enviro-Mark®NZ - an environmental management certification system for business - have been combined to become The Auckland BusinessCare Enviro-Mark Programme (ABCEM).  It is a two year programme which involves 71 businesses in the Auckland region, including 11 Waitakere businesses which are sponsored to:

• Implement resource efficiency, waste reduction and energy efficiency programmes
• Introduce environmental requirements for their suppliers and contractors
• Introduce purchasing policies to consider products that are environmentally friendly
• Adhere to relevant business environmental accords and environmental best practice guidelines and codes of practice
• Achieve Enviro-Mark®NZ Level 1 and 2, Bronze and Silver within the first year of the programme
• Achieve Enviro-Mark®NZ Level 3 Gold within the two-year programme period.

Each participating business will receive approximately 28 hours of advice on how to use their resources more efficiently, plus on-site support and a sponsorship of up to four-fifths towards the costs of the programme. Once Gold-level certification has been obtained businesses can use the Enviro-Mark® logo on their advertising , so as a business wanting to deal with other responsible businesses, or as a thoughtful consumer, keep an eye out for the Enviro-Mark® logo (above)!

The programme was launched in March 2004 with recruitment of businesses being completed in October 2004. Benchmarking and preparing for the Enviro-Mark®NZ Level 1 Bronze audits will continue in the first quarter of 2005.
