Why does water matter?
Perhaps you've heard about climate change? That's where the world's weather patterns are changing, temperatures are getting warmer and sometimes the rain does not fall where and when it is needed. That's a problem because we all need drinking water to live.
Here in Waitakere it rains quite a bit in winter but not so much in summer. Sometimes our summers get so dry we have to be super careful not to waste our drinking water because the amount of water in our dams gets very low.
And that's where you come in. Lots of you really do care about our environment and you want to protect the life you've got now and for when you're a grown-up.
If people are more careful with their drinking water now, we will all have enough to drink in the future. We do not want to spend millions of dollars building a new dam and all the treatment and pumping stations that go with it. Why? Not only would it be VERY expensive for us, it means we might have to flood part of our environment to make a new dam. A project that big would also create lots of carbon dioxide, which is bad for the health of our planet.
So… we all need to use less drinking water from the taps at home.
How can you help us do this?
- Check for leaks around the home – taps, the toilet, the shower
- Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth
- Use the dishwasher only when it has a full load
- Use the washing machine only when it has a full load
- Have a short shower instead of a bath
- Use a watering can or garden hose to water plants
- Collect rain in a rainbarrel to use for outdoor activities like watering the garden or cleaning the car.
