Another successful year of willow control has occurred in Te Henga wetland, with
the first trial completed to use a helicopter to control large, dense willows in
the heart of the wetland.
The trial was undertaken in February 2009 and covered a small area of 1.5ha.
Glyphosate herbicide was used and after stringent helicopter flying and
monitoring the willows have successfully been killed while saving the native
understorey.
A contractor is currently working in the wetland to drill and inject willows
either side of the Waitakere River, to open a clear channel through into the
wetland. Over the next two years all attempts will be made to remove as many
willows as possible and start retuning the wetland to its native glory.
The Green Network Community Assistance programme introduces Sustainable

Council to help restore their properties.
Neighbourhood groups are eligible for a range of help ranging from weed control
assistance, composting materials, and free plants to home energy efficiency
help.
