Each year the council undertakes a number of surveys and
marketing research projects to assist with its planning and
service delivery. The Local Government Act underscores the
fundamental importance of consultation for local
authorities, and specifically expects councils to inform
their decision making by taking into account the views of
those directly affected by council decisions. Consultation
might encompass the public as a whole, or special groups
affected by a specific issue.
Feedback from the public is vital to understanding what's
working well and what's not. A variety of methods are used
to gather information including telephone surveys,
paper-based questionnaires, digital tablets where the
respondent touches a screen to record his or her preferences
as well as on-line forms for submitting on annual and long
term plans etc. The latter enables residents to have a say
without leaving home or they can use a computer at one of
Waitakere's seven
learning centres.
The council also uses facilitated discussion groups and
forums on a wide variety of planning issues. Please visit
the council's Have Your Say web page for information on
having your say at public forums.
