"Hi, I'm Splash!
Let's use our
water wisely" |
EcoWater
EcoWater is a department of Waitakere City Council. We manage the City's assets and services that relate to the 'three waters' - water supply, wastewater, and stormwater.
We are committed to doing our job in a way that protects
public health and safety, respects the environment and uses
ratepayers' money wisely.
How the 'three waters' should be managed in the future is a
major challenge for all of us living in the Auckland region.
Central to Ecowater's philosophy is the Eco City
vision for social, economic and environmental sustainability
and the Council's strategic planning (through its Greenprint,
stated Objectives and Long Term Financial Strategy) sets the
direction for the business. EcoWater has a vision of
commitment to managing the rapid growth of Waitakere City
and increasing efficiency and effectiveness in a constantly
changing business environment.
Our long-term strategic plans for managing water are based
on the environment and natural water cycle. This affects how we manage water supply,
wastewater and stormwater.
Our Water Cycle Strategy was developed in consultation with
community groups and individuals. It aims to reduce
long-term costs and enhance environmental quality through
the reduction of stormwater, the generation of less
wastewater and the efficient use of our water supply. The
key to the strategy's success is community involvement and
understanding in decision-making processes.
In Waitakere, we have discovered that to be able to
sustainably manage water we need to conserve water, manage stormwater sustainably and recycle and reuse water to
minimise the cost of new infrastructure for stormwater,
wastewater and water supply.
We are progressing in the area of demand management, have
found opportunities in better catchment management planning
and improved the integration of all our water services with
the development of our strategic plan - the Water Cycle
Strategy. Through these projects and others, we believe we
are helping to turn the tide of environmental damage.

Regional Benchmarking
Efficient and integrated management of the three waters -
potable (drinking) water, wastewater (sewage) and stormwater
(runoff) is a vital component for the well-being and
lifestyle enjoyed by people across the wider Auckland
region.
Increasingly people are understanding the importance of
water conservation and environmental protection, and the
value of our clean and healthy water supplies.
Measuring our individual and collective performance and
sharing the results helps the Auckland region lead the
country in these most essential services, and provides a
platform to share learnings with the industry nationwide.
Now in its third year, the Auckland Water Industry
Performance Review has contributed to the development of
closer working relationships between members of the Auckland
water industry; wholesaler and retailers; territorial local
authorities and local network operators; and partnering
organisations. Gathering and providing the information
contained within this report involves a significant
commitment by all members of the Auckland water industry,
and is thanks to the efforts of key individuals within each
organisation.
