What Next?
Beginning Genealogy
Start with the information you know about yourself and work backwards. Talk
to family members about births, deaths and marriages and burial information
and gather names, places, dates and events. Other useful sources of
information that you may have at home are family bibles, photographs,
letters, naturalizations and citizenship certificates, school records,
diaries, journals, newspaper clippings and family memorabilia.
Discuss with your family members the possibility of making copies of birth,
death or marriage certificates which they have in their possession.
What to do first?
Record all the details you know already about yourself to build a picture of
your family on a family pedigree sheet (start with yourself and work back
one generation at a time). Completing family group sheets will help you find
out about people on your pedigree family sheet. These sheets are available
from the
New Zealand Society of Genealogists.
A New Zealand Society of Genealogists member will be available in the
Reference Department of
Waitakere Central
Library to answer your questions Monday - Thursday between 9am - 1pm, and on weekends by appointment only.
