Summer Reading Programme
2009/10 - Dive into Books!
Dive into Books! The Summer Reading Programme is a free, incentive-based reading
scheme which encourages children to maintain and improve their reading habits
over the summer holidays. It runs through December and January in all Waitakere
Library branches and ends with a prize giving. Applications are open from 27
October to 15 November. Children between five and 12 years of age are eligible
to apply.
How does the Summer Reading Programme work?
Check-in times
Applications for this year’s programme have now closed and 500 children have been selected to take part.If your application has been successful, you’ll be contacted by a Children’s
Librarian between the 25 and the 27 of November who will invite you to visit the library to enrol and confirm your place in the programme.
If your application has been unsuccessful, your name will be placed on a waiting list and you’ll be contacted if a space becomes available.
For more information, please contact the Children’s and Teens’ Services Team on
09 839 2260.
How does the Summer Reading Programme work?
Children who register for the programme agree to:
- Read for at least 15 minutes each day
- Visit their local library four times to “check in” with a librarian.
At each check-in, the librarian will talk to the child about the books he/she
has read, and provide a small incentive. Children who complete the programme are
invited to attend their branch’s prize giving, which is held in the evening at a
local community centre. Each child receives a medal, a certificate and a book
prize.

How many spaces are available? There are 500 places available in the Summer
Reading Programme. We expect to receive more than 500 applications and,
therefore, priority will be given to children with reading difficulties and
children who have never done the programme before. All remaining places will be
randomly allocated.

Why are you prioritising children with reading difficulties? The Summer Reading Programme is primarily designed to encourage reluctant
readers and children with reading difficulties to keep reading through the
summer holidays, and that is why these children will be offered the first places
in the programme. Due to the popularity of the programme, priority will also be
given to children who have never taken part before.

Why can't you let more children do the programme? We currently offer spaces to 500 children. This is the maximum number that the
library system can accommodate. Our aim is to maintain the quality of the
programme by working within set boundaries.

Can we submit more than one application?
For example, can I fill out an
application form for my child at Titirangi Library, at Glen Eden Library and at
New Lynn Library? No; only one application per child is permitted. If you wish to have your
child’s application considered at more than one library, you can indicate this
on your application form by ranking the library branches in order of preference.

Is it possible for one family member to get a place in the programme
while the other children miss out?No; children from the same family will not be split up if they submit a joint
application. (If, for example, one child were to get a place, then the other
children would be accepted too). Alternatively, if you are happy for your
children to be separated, you may complete a single application form for each
child. These applications would then be counted individually. In this case, one
child might get a place and the other children might miss out.

What if one child in the family has reading difficulties and the rest
don’t?Priority will be given to children with reading difficulties and therefore, if
the child who has the reading difficulty wins a place in the programme, his or
her siblings would automatically be accepted (if they had submitted a joint
application).

What if one child in the family has never done the programme before and
the rest have?Priority will be given to children who have never done the programme before and
therefore, if the child who has never participated wins a place in the
programme, his or her siblings would automatically be accepted (if they had
submitted a joint application).

Can we still do the programme if we’re going on holiday?Yes; you can still take part in the programme if you go away on holiday. Simply
let us know while registering when you’ll be able to check in. You still need to
read for at least 15 minutes each day and visit the library four times to check
in with a librarian.

Does my child need to have a library card to do the programme?Yes; children are required to have their own library cards in order to
participate in the programme. You are welcome to submit an application form
beforehand. If the application is successful you will be asked to join. Library
membership is free. Please visit your local library with both photo ID (e.g.
your driver’s licence or passport) and address ID (e.g. a rate account or bill)
and a staff member will be able to assist you further.

What books are children allowed to read for the programme?Children can read any books they like, both fiction and non-fiction, as long as
they are library books. Comic books and magazines may be included.

Who pays for the programme? The Summer Reading Programme is generously sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of West
Auckland (Henderson, New Lynn, Waitakere and West Harbour).
